Studies that address the preservation of the environment and confront economic indicators are fundamental for the success of the activity, since they are indispensable items for aquaculture sustainability. The objective of this work was to apply different economic indicators as a tool to assess the feasibility of implementing artificial floating island systems (AFIs), used to minimize the environmental impacts caused by the discharge of fish farming effluents. The experiment was carried out in two systems (with and without AFIs, in triplicates) along a semi-intensive production cycle of Nile tilapia. The average values of the cost of production and the following economic indicators were calculated regarding the conduct of the production cycle per hectare of water mirror: net financial revenue, profitability index, internal rate of return and net present value. Feed expense was the main parameter that affected total production costs in both systems. The study showed that the economic profitability was positive for both production systems. In the system with AFIs, the implementation of structures represented 3.86% of production costs, resulting in low-cost investments and maintenance, indicating profitability of the application of AFIs to the production system with attractive economic gains and return on invested capital, meeting the needs of small and medium rural producers.
