This paper sought to analyze the risk management practices adopted by Brazilian companies belonging to the automotive sector, which corresponds to an important sector of the national economy and one of the most affected by the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2020. For this reason, the multi-case study methodology was used through open semi-structured interviews with members directly linked to the risk management of the case organizations, to visualize the strategy adopted with a focus on the balance of employee safety and business sustainability. The period considered in the study was from January to December 2020. It was observed that companies belonging to the same economic group followed a strategy of establishing governance, through the creation of a crisis committee; followed by the definition of mitigating actions, based on the identification and classification of potential risks; and finally, alignment for the post-pandemic, through organizational adjustments based on this new reality. Thus, the companies studied showed speed and consistency in their initiatives, minimizing the damage imposed by the crisis scenario, ensuring the health of their employees and establishing a culture of awareness regarding the prevention of the new coronavirus, actions that were essential to preserve sustainability of business.
