Residues of mercury in commercial fish in the state of Pará: a systematic review

Mercury is an element with high accumulating power and even in low concentrations, its recurrent consumption can be harmful to health. In this sense, this study aimed to: carry out a temporal survey (two decades) of the literature on the levels of mercury concentrations in fish tissue samples from the State of Pará. The results extracted from the studies consulted clearly show, in the last two decades, a range of concentrations of total mercury in both carnivorous and non-carnivorous species. We conclude, therefore, that among commercial species of fish consumed in the State of Pará, the concentrations detected, only the carnivorous species (0.52 µg/g-1) were at the threshold of the food safety zone recommended by the World Health Organization, despite the natural concentrations of methylmercury in the soil and the intense and continuous mining activity, especially those of artisanal nature. Non-carnivorous species maintained a safe level regarding consumption considering the data evaluated.
